Animal welfare

All farms and production facilities supplying European Union countries must meet EU animal welfare standards. UK retailers impose their own additional standards on producers that contain even more stringent criteria than that stipulated by international legislation.

The European Commission’s 2007-2013 Rural Development Policy aims to put member states on an even footing in matters of agriculture and animal welfare by 2013. This policy includes areas such as access to drinkable water and high quality feed, regulation of the amount of light an individual animal has, how much space it has to move around in and the prevention of anti-social behaviour such as tail biting.  This standard is broadly comparable with the UK animal welfare requirements.

Products coming from farms and production facilities in Poland must meet EU or the higher level EU 2013 standards as a minimum to be accepted by UK retailers.
